Engineering Careers

Engineering is a very broad field. In general terms, engineering involves the application of math and science principles in order to solve technical problems. The solutions help meet the needs of consumers and society as a whole. There are dozens of types of engineering, which means engineering careers are in abundance. Whether you are interested in aerospace, manufacturing, agriculture, medicine, computers, electronics, manufacturing or petroleum, there are engineers needed in these fields and many more. Engineering careers are expected to be in high demand for at least the next five years. Most types of engineering careers are expected to see an increase of 10 percent or more. If you excel in math and science and enjoy solving problems, then you should look into engineering careers.

Engineering careers can be quite varied. Some engineers design new products and test them. Some may analyze problems and brainstorm solutions. They may create new processes. They may improve current products or supervise production in factories. They may create timelines and handle budgets. Almost all engineers must have excellent computer skills. Engineers spend a lot of time creating new designs and simulations. They may also use computers to monitor products and control processes.

There are 17 recognized specialties in engineering.

Aerospace engineers manufacture aircraft. Aerospace engineering careers involve testing new designs and developing new technologies to be used for space exploration.

Agricultural engineers focus on biological resources. They design new machinery, sensors and structures. They analyze current processes to make them more efficient or create new processes for soil and water conservation.

Engineering careers in the biomedical field focus on the design and development of new medical devices and equipment. These include medical information systems, instrumentation, prostheses and artificial organs.

Chemical engineers use their knowledge to create new chemicals. These chemicals may be used in the manufacturing of food, electronics, clothing and paper.

Civil engineering careers are the oldest engineering careers, and probably the best-known. Civil engineers create roads, buildings, bridges, water supply systems and other structures. Civil engineering incorporates many specialties, such as transportation, construction and water resources.

Computer hardware engineers design computer hardware and equipment such as computer chips, circuit boards, keyboards, printers and routers.

Electrical engineers design and test electrical equipment such as lighting, wiring in structures, machinery controls, motors, and communications and navigation systems. They also design electrical systems in aircraft and automobiles. Electronics engineering careers design and test electronic devices such as music players, communication systems and global position systems (GPS).

Environmental engineers use their knowledge to solve environmental problems such as pollution, waste, recycling and public health concerns. They may conduct studies and focus on worldwide environmental issues such as ozone depletion and global warming.

Health and safety engineers use their specialized knowledge to help prevent hazards in the workplace and analyze them when they do occur.

Industrial engineering careers focus on using people, machines, energy and information as efficiently as possible. Their main goal is to increase productivity.

Marine engineers design and create boats and ships.

Materials engineers design and test materials used to create a variety of products, such as computer hardware, sporting goods, aircraft parts and many others. Most material engineers focus on particular materials, such as metal, glass, plastic or ceramics.

Mechanical engineering careers are very broad. Mechanical engineers can design, create and work on any type of power-producing or power-using machine such as generators, engines, air conditioners, refrigerators, tools, elevators and robots.

Mining engineering careers focus on finding and extracting coal, minerals and metals for use in manufacturing. Mining engineers design mines and oversee their operations.

Nuclear engineers design processes and systems in order to generate power and other benefits from radiation and nuclear energy.

Petroleum engineers work with geologists to extract oil and gas from underground formations. They analyze rock formations and use various methods to recover natural resources as inexpensively as possible.
